Clinical & Trichological Assessment Services
Blood tests form part of our diagnostic support framework within trichological and clinical hair loss assessment. They are utilised to help identify underlying abnormalities or deficiencies that may contribute to disorders of hair growth and scalp health.
Laboratory investigations may assist in the evaluation of contributory factors including, but not limited to, hormonal imbalance, micronutrient and nutritional deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, inflammatory markers, immune system irregularities, and other systemic conditions relevant to hair follicle function.
Genetic Hair Thinning
Some forms of hair thinning are hereditary, including androgenetic alopecia (male- or female-pattern hair loss). In these cases, genetic predisposition plays a major role in the progressive miniaturisation of hair follicles. Blood testing may be used to identify additional contributing factors that can be addressed to help support hair health and optimise treatment outcomes.
Non-Genetic Hair Shedding
Hair shedding is often non-genetic and may result from conditions such as Telogen Effluvium, Diffuse Alopecia, and Anagen Effluvium. These conditions can be triggered by stress, malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, illness, immune-related factors, inflammatory conditions, or certain medications. Blood testing helps identify underlying causes, differentiate reversible medical factors from hereditary hair loss, and guide personalised treatment plans.
Autoimmune and Inflammatory Factors
Hair loss may also be linked to autoimmune disorders, such as Alopecia Areata, where the immune system attacks hair follicles. Additionally, underlying inflammatory conditions—including chronic scalp inflammation, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, or other systemic inflammatory disorders—may contribute to hair shedding. In some cases, a scalp or skin biopsy may be required to confirm the diagnosis of certain inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, and we refer patients to appropriately regulated dermatology specialists when clinically indicated. Blood investigations can support identification of immune or inflammatory markers to guide appropriate medical or trichological management.
Mixed or Overlapping Hair Loss Conditions
In some patients, hair loss may involve a combination of multiple factors. For example, a patient may have genetic thinning compounded by Telogen Effluvium due to stress or illness, or an autoimmune condition overlapping with diffuse shedding. Blood testing, in conjunction with trichological assessment and clinical evaluation, helps to distinguish these overlapping conditions and allows for a more comprehensive and personalised treatment plan.
Blood Testing Services
At London Hair & Skin Care Clinic, blood samples are collected and analysed in partnership with the Marylebone Diagnostic Centre Laboratory, a fully accredited diagnostic facility. All testing is conducted under strict clinical protocols to ensure accuracy, patient safety, and reliable results to support personalised hair loss and scalp treatment programmes.
All blood testing services are undertaken as adjunct diagnostic tools and do not constitute a standalone medical diagnosis. Results are interpreted in conjunction with trichological consultation, medical history, clinical examination, and—where required—referral to or collaboration with appropriately regulated healthcare practitioners.
Blood biomarker analysis is conducted under the governance of qualified healthcare professionals to support safe, ethical, and evidence-based treatment planning within scope of practice.
At London Hair & Skin Care Clinic Laboratory, venepuncture, sample handling, and processing are performed in accordance with recognised clinical, laboratory, and infection-control standards, ensuring accuracy, patient safety, and diagnostic reliability in support of personalised hair loss and scalp treatment programmes.
